Over the past 8 years, we have been planting food plots on our 100 acre "Farm" in Upstate NY. Our "Farm" does not grow any commercial crops, only crops for wildlife that is left standing and not harvested.
Our 100 acres consists about 60% of fields and 40% of woods. We plant about 15 acres of food plots each year for deer and turkey hunting, plus to help the wildlife through the winter. The remaining fields are left to grow for cover and hopefully turn into brushy bedding cover, but really hasn't happened in the 8 years yet, probably because of browsing in the winter months.
My favorite 3 food plots are brassicas, corn and white clover, here are my reasons for each:
- Brassicas:
Great for attracting deer during hunting season. We plant small plots (1/4-1/2 acre each) in front of our stands for concentrating deer activity for archery season.
