Mature 8, 20" antler spread, dressed at 175lbs. Seemed like an older buck, possibly 4.5 or 5.5 yo.
Since seeing 3 mature bucks at last light in Log Cabin opening day, day 2 was predicting a wind that was not favorable for the Log Cabin. Since I believe in going full bore at an opportunity and not just waiting for better conditions since bucks can move out of area, I decided to build a new blind to put us in range and also downwind. Since the downwind location was in the corn, we spent the morning building a "corn stalker" blind using corn stalks already in that area of the field secured on to black coated chicken wire and metal stakes. We used rubber boots and rubber gloves to set up corn stalker. To minimize exposure, we had just one window facing forward, this strategy was a one-trick pony. About 1 hour before last light, we had a few does enter the field, which tested that our wind was in our favor. Then around 6:30pm, we saw the rack buck working his way across the hedge row into our brassica patch. He came in directly at us and was feeding just over 40 yards out. He kept feeding around and I ranged him at 40 yards, then Dad made a perfect shot.
